Dynamite Dog Training has teamed up with the South Florida Dog Training Network to put together a volunteer training program for the Miami Dade Animal Services Shelter. This shelter is in great need of help from volunteers. In 2009-10 this shelter has taken in around 36,000 animals . Around 8,300 of them were adopted, 4,000 of them were transfers, and around 1,500 were returned to their owner. Around 20,000 were euthanized.
Each day an average of 100 pets are abandoned at Animal Services, it is the only open admission shelter in the community. In the busy summer months, the intake is 4,000 animals in a month, with that number inflating to over 230 a day. That is an outrageous number for any shelter to deal with.
What is our goal? To place as many adoptable pets into the hands of people as possible. We will be helping to evaluate the dogs, train them, and help get them adopted. Sadly, euthanasia is the fate for many of these animals. The heartbreaking decision to euthanize a pet is based on health, temperament, stray hold period, the owner’s request and space. It is not possible to hold pets indefinitely due to the high volume of pets entering the shelter every day.
If you are an animal lover than these numbers should make you ONLY want to adopt from one of these shelters or rescue groups!
In 2009-2010 the percentage of euthanized animals that were brought into the shelter were:
22% puppies
43% dogs
66%kittens
90% cats
These statistics were a real eye opener to me. Not only is Dynamite Dog Training going to do our part, but I am going to ask that you do your part as well. Whether it is volunteering, adopting a pet, or simply getting someone to change their minds about surrendering or unnecessarily breeding their pets. PLEASE GET YOUR PETS SPAYED AND NUETERED! Go visit one of your local shelters, especially if you are in the area please go to the Miami-Dade Animal Services. I promise you, your eyes will be forced wide open, full of tears. Please do what you can today, I know I can’t wait to get started!!!
